Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model of Care

The part can never be whole unless the Whole is well – Plato

Spiritual Health Association (SHA) advocates for the integration of the biopsychosocial-spiritual model of care in contemporary health services. While traditional medical models can tend to overly focus on physical aspects, the biopsychosocial-spiritual model recognises that true wellbeing equally encompasses physical, social, mental and spiritual health. This aligns with the World Health Organization’s definition of the four dimensions of wellbeing (WHO Geneva Charter, 2021).

Including the spiritual domain in care enables it to be truly holistic and person-centred. Spiritual care practitioners should be integral members of multidisciplinary allied health teams within health services. They provide a space for individuals to explore meaning-making, identity, and coping mechanisms within the context of their beliefs, values, and life experiences. By addressing all aspects of an individual’s wellbeing, better health outcomes can be achieved.

At SHA, we continuously lead the integration of safe and high-quality spiritual care in healthcare through our efforts in research, education, and collaboration. We support healthcare providers in delivering comprehensive and compassionate care that addresses all dimensions of wellbeing. By doing so, we aim to create a healthcare environment where everyone’s right to holistic, person-centred care is recognised and realised.
