Crossroads
This past month, my professional life and personal passions intersected in several unexpected ways. On one occasion, I learned that a bicycle accident fatality reported on the news involved a member of a close friend’s triathlon club. Coincidentally, this individual was also a former patient whom I had supported through a serious health battle over many years.
Within a week of this sad news, during a training ride with my own triathlon club, I found myself first on the scene of a cyclist who had suffered a health episode. After managing the immediate situation and ensuring medical help was on its way, my colleagues and I worked to keep the young members safe and secure the area. We also offered support to the cyclist’s friends. At the time of writing, I’m relieved to share that the cyclist had survived.
All these experiences reinforce the immense value of spiritual care and the importance of being present in people’s lives, regardless of their personal spirituality or faith background. As spiritual care practitioners, we are granted the immense privilege and opportunity to support people during life’s toughest challenges, offering much-needed understanding and support that transcend any presumptions.
My hope is that society will come to recognise the importance of spirituality throughout all aspects of life, not just in times of crisis, and that we will all realise and embrace our true nature as spiritual beings, fostering a deeper connection with ourselves and each other.
